Mission Statement

Yesterday’s Muse Books opened the doors of its first brick-and-mortar shop in December 2008, after a number of years spent selling books exclusively online. I should introduce myself, as well — my name is Jonathan Smalter, and I am the owner and operator. I have been professionally involved in bookselling for over 10 years, and personally enthralled by them my entire life. My store is located in the heart of Webster village, in western New York. I grew up in Webster, just a stone’s throw away from our current location.

From the outset, it has been the mission of Yesterday’s Muse Books to provide quality books and great service, and share our knowledge and love of books with our customers. Part of the reason we sell books is because we have a firm belief in their ability to positively affect people’s lives. I myself can name several books that had great influence on my development as a person, or that reshaped my perspective. Beyond that, we also believe individual books, and book collections, to be historical artifacts that should be preserved and treasured.

To that end, the way we run our business is designed to explain to others why books are important and, in many cases, valuable. We want to make it easier for you to find and enjoy books, and that means giving you a lot of information. We also hold ourselves to a high standard in terms of service. Our online orders ship in sturdy boxes, we protect dust jackets in mylar, and we provide complimentary tracking service. We want customers to be confident in the level of quality they can expect when ordering from us. Sometimes this might mean our copy isn’t the cheapest one available. But if we have a choice between the cheapest price and the best service, we will choose service every time. We think you will, too.

Hopefully this hasn’t been too long-winded of an introduction. Stay tuned to our blog for special features, reviews, background information on books and authors, and other book-related musings. We hope you will also feel free to chime in with your own comments — let us know what you like, what you would change, or what you think we should try. Until next time, keep reading!
